In the last decade, there has been a dramatic increase of behavioral health disorders in children and adolescents, which has the potential to result in long-term, negative effects on their health and our larger society. To address this mental health crisis, one community is responding to the needs of its youth on an unprecedented scale.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital will open a new facility that, upon its completion in March 2020, will help thousands of children with behavioral and psychiatric disorders. Construction of this nine-story facility, dedicated solely to comprehensive mental health care for children and adolescents, is the largest facility of its kind located on a pediatric hospital campus.

The new Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion, shown in this video, will feel open and welcoming with unprecedented access to nature and natural light while maintaining essential safety standards. Innovative design features include:

  • Largest free-standing facility, fully dedicated to psychiatric care on the campus of a children’s hospital. This reduces stigma – sending a message that mental health is just as important as physical health.
  • Safe outdoor spaces including a rooftop play deck with stainless steel cable netting essential for safety and shade, but really where physically healthy children can still be kids that play and run.
  • Extended porches for inpatients to access outdoor space without leaving the secure inpatient units.
  • Three separate inpatient units for children and adolescents who need psychiatric care and for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a crisis stabilization unit and clinic space for intensive outpatient treatment.
